Oregon State Police (OSP), with the assistance of Wheeler County Sheriff's Office, arrested a 75-year old man Sunday afternoon when he attempted to elude an OSP trooper east of Prineville along Highway 26 for approximately 40 miles. The man was arrested by officers near his residence in Mitchell.
On July 21, 2013 at approximately 3:49 p.m., an OSP senior trooper attempted to stop a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup eastbound on Highway 26 near milepost 24 for failing to maintain a lane of travel. The driver failed to yield and attempted to elude the trooper eastbound at speeds reaching near 85 mph. While attempting to elude, the pickup was involved in a minor non-injury crash with another vehicle at the Burnt Ranch Road intersection and continued eastbound.
Wheeler County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) went to the Mitchell-area to assist as the pickup continued eastbound. At approximately 4:12 p.m., the driver, KENNETH NORMAN COOK, age 75, from Mitchell, was taken into custody by WCSO and OSP around the corner from his Mitchell-area residence.
COOK was lodged in the Crook County Jail for Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle, Reckless Driving, and Recklessly Endangering Another Person. He was also cited for Driving While Suspended. A misdemeanor Hit & Run charge is pending in Wheeler County. According to Crook County Sheriff's Office, COOK was released from custody pending a future court appearance.
