On Tuesday, August 18th at approximately 8:06PM, Troopers from The Dalles Area Command were at the scene of a crash that had occurred on I-84 near milepost 78.5 eastbound (just west of The Dalles).
This non-injury crash resulted in the westbound fast lane becoming blocked after two sections of the concrete center divider were pushed into that lane. Additionally, both the eastbound fast lane and a portion of the eastbound slow lane were blocked by vehicles and debris. Traffic was being directed through the crash scene in both directions by Troopers and emergency vehicles. During this investigation a westbound 1990 Nissan Sentra operated by Dustin MCMILLEN, age 31, of Bingen, WA was operating in the fast lane approaching the lane closure at the crash scene.
An OSP 2015 Dodge Charger was stopped in the fast lane with his emergency lights activated, preventing traffic from hitting the large pieces of concrete in the roadway. MCMILLEN struck the rear of the patrol car at approximately 65 mph, causing significant damage to both vehicles. MCMILLEN was using his safety restraints and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation for minor injuries. MCMILLEN indicated he was not paying attention to the road ahead of him because he was looking at the crash scene on the eastbound side of the interstate. MCMILLEN was issued citations for careless driving and failing to maintain a safe distance from an emergency vehicle.
The Oregon State Police was assisted at the scene by the Wasco County Sheriff's Office, Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
