Oregon State Police Sergeant Mike Iwai was nationally recognized for his dedication and expertise as a drug recognition expert (a law enforcement officer trained to identify people whose driving is impaired by drugs other than, or addition to, alcohol).
Sergeant Iwai received the "Outstanding Hero - Individual" award at the National Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) 35th Anniversary Conference in Arlington, Virginia.
From 2008 to 2014, Sgt. Iwai was the Oregon Drug Evaluation and Classification (DECP) Program Coordinator. Over that period, he managed a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Program that had over 180 DREs statewide, which included 36 DRE instructors. In addition, he was responsible for other programs that fall under the control of the Oregon DECP such as Advanced Roadside Impairment Driving Enforcement (ARIDE), Drug That Impair Driving (DID), and Drug Impairment Training for Educational Professionals (DITEP).
Furthermore, Sergeant Iwai was assigned as the agency Standardized Field Sobriety Testing coordinator for several years and managed two DRE related Highway Safety grants, which were the DRE Overtime and DRE Training.
Sgt. Iwai was Chairman of the Oregon DRE Advisory Committee and the Chairman of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) DRE Section. For the IACP DRE Section, he had previously held the third, second, and first vice-chair positions. He is also an appointed member to the IACP Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) and serves on the curriculum subcommittee.
Sgt. Iwai has been with the Oregon State Police for over eighteen years and served seven years in the U.S. Army. In 2014 he transferred to the patrol division. The current DECP coordinator is Sergeant Evan Sether.
