No one was injured Wednesday afternoon when a small plane reportedly lost power and made an emergency landing along Interstate 5 between Roseburg and Sutherlin. The plane will remain in the center median until it can be prepped to be placed on a trailer and transported from its present location.

On July 24, 2013 at approximately 1:49 p.m., Oregon State Police (OSP), Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Sutherlin Police Department, ODOT and local fire personnel responded to a report that an airplane made an emergency landing along Interstate 5 near milepost 131. The small plane was occupied by two people.

According to the pilot, MARC GIRARDET, age 38, from Tenmile, Oregon, the Cessna 177 Cardinal RG four-seat single engine plane departed Roseburg enroute to Portland. About 20 minutes into the flight, the plane began to lose power so GIRARDET turned around to return to Roseburg when he had to make the emergency landing. After touching down on the freeway, he steered the plane onto a center median crossover gravel lane and stopped.

Neither GIRARDET or the 56-year old male passenger were injured.

Traffic is moving in both directions. OSP & ODOT urge travelers to not be distracted by the unusual sight of an airplane parked in the center median when traveling through the area.
