A bicyclist crashed into a semi-truck and trailer on Highway 224 near SE Johnson Rd in the Milwaukie area Saturday morning. The bicyclist suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Portland Area Command and continuing the investigation.
On July 27, 2013 at approximately 9:30 a.m., a Freightliner Semi-Truck and trailer, operated by CRAIG JOHNSON, age 58, from Vancouver Washington, was stopped in the westbound lanes of Highway 224 at a traffic signal near SE Johnson Rd. A bicyclist, LAWRENCE MASCOTTE , age 71, from Portland was westbound on the paved shoulder of Highway 224. MASCOTTE'S bicycle had mechanical failure and caused him to lose control and collide with the semi-trailer operated by JOHNSON. MASCOTTE and the bicycle came to rest under the semi-trailer.
A witness saw the crash and pulled his vehicle in front of JOHNSON'S semi-truck and trailer to keep him from moving. JOHNSON was unaware of the collision.
MASCOTTE was transported by ground ambulance to Oregon Health Science University (OHSU) with serious injuries. MASCOTTE was wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the crash. JOHNSON was wearing safety restraints and was not injured.
(OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation and no enforcement action has been taken. The highway was closed for about 20 minutes.
(OSP) was assisted at the scene by Clackamas Fire, Clackamas County Sheriff and AMR.
