Two NASCAR racing cars were damaged Friday morning after a tire on a trailer containing the vehicles overheated and caught fire along westbound Interstate 84 north of Baker City. The driver pulled into the Baker Valley Rest Area where firefighters responded to put out the fire that spread into the trailer hauling the vehicles and equipment.
On August 16, 2013 at approximately 8:25 a.m., a Peterbilt truck pulling an enclosed semi-trailer driven by JOHN A. WOOD, age 51, from Eagle, Idaho, was westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 295 when a left side tire on the trailer overheated and caught fire. The fire began spreading onto the trailer's exterior and interior as WOOD pulled into the Baker Valley Rest Area.
Baker Rural Fire Protection District personnel responded to the rest area and put out the fire which caused extensive damage to the trailer. One of the vehicles received significant damage and the other vehicle had windshield and front damage. WOOD was enroute with the vehicles to a NASCAR racing event in Monroe, Washington.
The rest area was closed until the vehicles can be removed and the scene cleared.
OSP troopers from the Baker City office were assisted at the scene by Baker County Sheriff's Office, Baker Rural Fire Protection District, Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, and ODOT.
