On May 13, 2017, at approximately 5:00 PM, Oregon State Police troopers and emergency workers responded to a single vehicle crash on HWY 97 near MP 50. The crash resulted in a single fatality of a passenger, identified as Shawn Campbell (age 39 from Pendleton).
The preliminary investigation indicates the driver, identified as Tiarra Burnette (age 40 from Pendleton), was driving a white 2012 Kia Ultima northbound on HWY 97. Hail began to come down and the driver lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle fishtailed, struck an embankment, and rolled. The vehicle came to rest on the driver side. Campbell was in the rear passenger seat and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The right front passenger, identified as Joseph R. Perilli (age 28 from Pendleton) and Burnette were not injured.
OSP was assisted by Wasco County Sheriff's Office and Sherman County Fire & Rescue. All occupants were wearing seat-belts.
