Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into a single vehicle fatal crash on Highway 30 near Clatskanie in Clatsop County. The lone occupant of the vehicle was pronounced deceased and the crash closed the highway for about an hour. The identity of the driver is provided in this release.
According to Sergeant Jason Linland, on December 6, 2013, at 12:12 p.m., a 2003 Chevrolet pickup, driven by DAVID GLATFELTER, age 39 year, from Portland, was eastbound on Highway 30 near milepost 66. GLATFELTER went to pass an eastbound commercial motor vehicle when he lost control of his pickup. The pickup went across the oncoming lane and into a ditch where it rolled onto its top coming to rest in a small waterway.
Several bystanders stopped after the crash occurred and were able to assist GLATFELTER from the vehicle. After GLATFELTER was assisted from the pickup he collapsed. Bystanders and first responders performed lifesaving measures on GLATFELTER without success. GLATFELTER was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.
Investigators believe that speed was a contributing factor in the crash. GLATFELTER was reportedly wearing safety restraints at the time of the crash. Road conditions at the time were snow and ice with some dry patches.
OSP troopers from the Saint Helens Work Site are continuing the investigation.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, Clatskanie Police Department, and Clatskanie Fire Department.
