A 54-year old man arrested Thursday morning by Linn County Sheriff's Office following standoff at a Scio-area residence is facing additional charges following an Oregon State Police (OSP) Arson & Explosives detective's investigation into the cause of a fire that was started during the incident.
On the evening of December 25, 2013, Linn County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a disturbance at 38829 North West Cherry Street in Scio involving an armed man identified as RAYMON BEASLEY, age 54. After a deputy arrived, the man armed with a rifle barricaded himself inside the residence where his mother lives. Linn County SWAT team members responded to the scene and shortly after midnight the glow of a fire was seen inside a room of the residence. SWAT members fired tear gas munitions inside the residence to get BEASLEY to surrender. Approximately 20 minutes later, BEASELY came to a window and was pulled outside by SWAT members were he was taken into custody. Scio Fire District firefighters then quickly suppressed the fire.
Linn County Sheriff's Office and Scio Fire District requested an OSP Arson & Explosives Section detective respond to investigate the cause of the fire that originated in the master bedroom of the residence.
Subsequent investigation determined the fire was incendiary, not accidental, and is alleged to have been started by BEASLEY using an open flame object applied to combustible paper products.
The fire caused over $50,000 damage to the residence and a parked vehicle.
Working in cooperation with the Linn County District Attorney's Office, on December 27, 2013, OSP Detective Howard Greer contacted BEASLEY at the Linn County Jail where he was lodged previously on several charges. Detective Greer informed BEASLEY that he was also being charged with Arson in the First Degree, Arson in the Second Degree, Reckless Burning, and Criminal Mischief in the First Degree.
