Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation of Sunday afternoon's single vehicle fatal traffic crash along Highway 20 east of Bend that resulted in the death of a Middleton, Idaho man and serious injuries to the vehicle's driver. The names of the two occupants are released in this update following confirmation that next of kin were notified by Canyon County, Idaho Sheriff's Office.
On December 29, 2013 at approximately 4:30 p.m., a 1998 Dodge pickup driven by MATTHEW A. DREYER, age 35, from Star, Idaho, was traveling westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 31 negotiating a curve. The pickup went off the side of the highway and DREYER over-corrected trying to bring it back under control. The pickup rolled an unknown number of times before coming to rest off the south side of the highway.
DREYER was ejected and seriously injured. He was taken by Air Link ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
Passenger CHRISTOPHER H. JOHANSON, age 36, from Middleton, Idaho, was partially ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene.
OSP troopers from the Bend Area Command office are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash. Alcohol is being investigated as a contributing factor. Safety restraint use is pending confirmation.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, ODOT and fire personnel.
