Two people were injured Wednesday morning in a commercial truck crash on Highway 97 about three miles north of Gilchrist. Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation and would like to remind all travelers to be aware of the need to slow down as temperatures may drop and area roadways become unexpectedly icy.
According to Senior Trooper Jason Hansen, on January 8, 2014 at approximately 4:24 a.m., a 2012 Peterbilt truck pulling semi-trailer loaded with irrigation pipe and equipment driven by SHELLY L. YOUNG, age 59, from Marysville, California, was traveling northbound on Highway 97 near milepost 180. According to YOUNG, the truck lost traction and she lost control as the truck and trailer traveled across the highway were it overturned and came to rest on the west side shoulder.
ODOT and OSP arrived on scene of the crash which was initially reported as non-injury. YOUNG and passenger/co-driver SUSAN G. WALKER, age 50, from Sacramento, California, were trapped inside the truck injured. Fire and medical personnel from Crescent Rural Fire Protection District responded to the scene and extricated both occupants. They were transported by ground ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for treatment.
ODOT provided traffic control as the highway remained open for traffic. A local tow company was coming to the scene to recover and remove the vehicles and load.
With weather and road conditions changing, sometimes unexpectedly, OSP and ODOT urge all travelers to be aware of the potential for ice and slick roads. Keep up-to-date on conditions by monitoring weather reports and going to ODOT's TripCheck.com website.
