Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Wednesday morning's fatal pedestrian crash involving a commercial motor vehicle on I-5 south of Roseburg. Names of the involved are included in this release.
According to Lt. Douglas Ladd, on January 29, 2014 at approximately 11:45 a.m., a 2012 Freightliner Truck and trailer, operated ALVIN CHANDRA, age 29, from Elk Grove, California was southbound on I-5 near milepost 124 when a pedestrian walked into the southbound lane of travel. CHANDRA was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian, who died at the scene. The pedestrian is identified as RONALD PAGE, age 55, from Roseburg. CHANDRA is cooperating with the investigation.
According to witnesses PAGE appeared to make several attempts to cross the southbound lanes of the freeway and a number of vehicles made evasive maneuvers to avoid hitting him prior to the crash.
OSP troopers from the Roseburg Area Command are continuing the investigation and are requesting any witnesses that observed PAGE prior to and at the time of the crash to call the OSP at 541-440-3334. Senior Trooper Robert Gorman is the lead investigator.
OSP was assisted at the scene by ODOT, Roseburg Police Department, and Roseburg Fire. One lane was closed for several hours as OSP troopers complete the investigation.
