Oregon State Police (OSP) and local emergency responders were on scene Thursday afternoon of a single vehicle minor injury crash along Highway 22 west of Detroit in which a passenger car traveled off the highway and into a creek. Two people were transported with minor injuries and their names are released in this update.

On February 27, 2014 at approximately 1:28 p.m., OSP, ODOT and Gates Rural Fire Protection District were dispatched to a report of a vehicle in water off Highway 22 near Big Cliff Dam. Upon arrival they found the vehicle off the highway near milepost 39 in Sardine Creek in about 3 feet of water.

According to Sergeant Mark Davie, a witness following the 2001 Toyota Avalon said it failed to negotiate a curve and drove straight off the highway, crashing through a guardrail and down the embankment into a creek. Driver KATHRYN HANSMAN SPICE, age 69, and husband/passenger BYRON SPICE, age 78, from NE Portland, were removed by firefighters and transported to Santiam Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

OSP troopers investigated and determined driver fatigue may have been a contributing factor. The driver was cited for Fail to Drive Within Lane.
