Oregon State Police (OSP), with the assistance of the Marion County medical examiner, is continuing the investigation into Friday morning's fatal pedestrian-involved traffic crash that occurred in the northbound lanes about two miles north of Woodburn. Initial investigation indicates the pedestrian intentionally moved into the truck's path resulting in the death of the 50-year old man. His name will be released later today.

On April 25, 2014 at approximately 5:47 a.m., a representative of Pacific Sanitation Company notified OSP Northern Command Center dispatch that one of their drivers struck a pedestrian in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near the ODOT truck weigh station. OSP, Woodburn Police Department, Woodburn Fire Department, and ODOT responded to the scene where the deceased adult male pedestrian was found lying in the right northbound lane. The involved truck stopped on the right northbound shoulder about a quarter mile north of the victim near the entrance to the ODOT weigh station near milepost 274.

The truck pulling a trailer driven by ALBERT McCORMICK JR, age 63, from Stayton, was northbound in the right hand lane approaching a red sport utility vehicle stopped on the right shoulder. As the truck got closer, the victim stepped into the right traffic lane so McCORMICK moved toward the center lane. The victim then moved toward the center lane and was sideswiped by the truck.

All lanes were temporarily blocked for about fifteen minutes. After emergency responders arrived on scene, at about 6:02 a.m. the left northbound lane was opened for traffic. With ODOT's help, two lanes for traffic were utilized using the left inside shoulder as a lane to help more traffic move past the scene.

OSP troopers from the Salem Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Since an earlier request to hear from potential witnesses was reported by media, OSP has heard from other citizens who are providing helpful information for the investigation. Senior Trooper Craig Ball is the lead investigator.

All lanes were opened by 10:00 a.m.
