Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Sunday morning's serious injury single vehicle traffic crash that occurred along Highway 26 in Welches. The driver's name is released in this update. Alcohol is being investigated as a contributing factor.

On May 25, 2014 at approximately 9:10 a.m., a Ford Focus driven by DOUGLAS R. WALTERS, age 64, from Rhododendron, was traveling eastbound on Highway 26 approaching Welches Road. According to an off duty firefighter traveling westbound, the Ford Focus was going at a high rate of speed, crossed the highway in front of the witness's vehicle and struck a pole head-on on the north side of the highway.

WALTERS was trapped and extricated from the vehicle. A small fire started that was put out by good samaratins who stopped at the scene. He was transported by LifeFlight to Oregon Health & Science University and is in critical condition. Preliminary investigation indicates he was not using safety restraints.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Hoodland Fire Department and Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
