Injury Traffic Crash - Highway 234 east of Gold Hill (Photo)

An 18-year old Gold Hill resident is being treated at Rogue Regional Medical Center and undergoing a mental health examination after intentionally driving his vehicle into a power pole along Highway 234 about five miles north east of Gold Hill.

On May 26, 2014 at approximately 3:30 p.m., a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder driven by the 18-year old male was traveling westbound on Highway 234 near milepost 5 at about 60 mph. The driver swerved off the road into a power pole with the intent to harm himself. After impact it was reported the driver stumbled out of the vehicle into a ditch where a witness cared for him until medical personnel arrived.

When Jackson County Fire District No. 3 and Mercy Flights personnel arrived, the driver was conscious and alert. He was transported by air ambulance to Rogue Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and a mental health examination.

OSP troopers and Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputies also responded to the scene. The impact sheared the power pole in half and power lines dropped onto the ground. Pacific Power & Light personnel responded to the scene for repairs. ODOT was on scene for traffic control. The eastbound lane was closed for repairs.
