Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into a bicycle-involved injury traffic crash that occurred Wednesday afternoon along Highway 26 about seven miles east of Sandy at the bottom of Cherryville Hill.
On June 18, 2014 at approximately 3:15 p.m., a 1998 Plymouth Voyager van driven by IRMA SWEARENGEN, age 80, from Sandy, was eastbound in the right hand lane on Highway 26 near milepost 32. As SWEARENGEN passed a cyclist riding in vicinity of the right shoulder, her van's right side mirror struck the cyclist's left hip.
The cyclist, KENNEDY SALVETER, age 20, from Sandy, was knocked down and injured. He was wearing a protective helmet. SALVETER was transported by AMR ambulance to Legacy Mt. Hood Medical Center in Gresham with non-life threatening injuries.
SWEARENGEN complained of chest pains following the crash and was evaluated at the scene by paramedics. She was not taken to a hospital.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Sandy Fire District 72. Trooper Ted Moisan is the lead investigator. No enforcement action taken at this time.
OSP and ODOT urge everyone to remember that no matter how you travel, there are some simple steps you can take to improve safety:
* Pay attention: your life depends on it. An inattentive driver is the most common cause of work zone crashes.
* Buckle up every time. Safety belts and child safety seats are the biggest contributors to saving lives in crashes.
* Pedestrians and bicyclists: Stay alert, be predictable, follow traffic signals, wear light-colored or reflective clothing, and be especially careful at intersections.
* Share the road. Check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes. Don't tailgate.
* Don't drive, walk or ride impaired. Alcohol, illegal drugs and even some legal drugs can reduce the ability to use good judgment.
* Obey the speed limit. Excessive speed is a factor in many crashes and the most common one in crashes that result in fatalities.
