Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into the cause of Tuesday afternoon's minor injury commercial truck crash that occurred off the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 north of Grants Pass. The truck and load of lumber came to rest several hundred feet off the freeway down an embankment. Recovery of the vehicles and load is expected to take a couple days.
On October 7, 2014 at approximately 12:50 p.m., a 2010 Freightliner truck pulling a semi-trailer loaded with lumber driven by MACEO BOSTON III, age 45, from Grants Pass, was southbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 70 going uphill when the driver lost control. The truck and trailer struck the metal guardrail, damaging several posts and sections of guardrail as it continued off the freeway and down an embankment. The truck and trailer continued several hundred feet before hitting a tree and stopping in a location not visible to passing traffic.
Another commercial truck driver made his way down to the crash scene and extinguished a small fire in the vehicle.
Personnel from Rural/Metro Fire Department and AMR Ambulance responded and helped BOSTON back to the freeway area. He was transported by ambulance to Asante Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass with minor injuries.
Approximately 180 gallons of diesel spilled near the wreckage toward Rat Creek. A hazardous materials response team was being dispatched to handle the spill at the request of the trucking company, A&M Transport from Glendale, Oregon.
ODOT is handling incident scene management. OSP Senior Trooper Scott Holsworth is the lead investigator.
