A Cottage Grove-area man with felony warrants driving a stolen pickup was arrested Saturday evening by Oregon State Police (OSP) after attempting to elude troopers along Highway 26 in Grant County.
According to Senior Trooper Erich Timko, on July 20, 2013 at approximately 7:20 p.m., OSP troopers attempted to stop a reported stolen 1992 Toyota pickup westbound on Highway 26 near milepost 166 east of John Day. The driver failed to yield, attempting to elude the troopers by turning onto a private gravel driveway near milepost 164. The pickup struck a barbed wire fence and continued driving recklessly on the gravel driveway, before reaching a residence at the end of the driveway. Troopers boxed in the pickup and the driver immediately surrendered and was taken into custody.
The driver, DOUGLAS GENE WILLIAMS, age 41, from Cottage Grove, was later lodged in the Grant County Jail on the following charges:
* Felony warrant - Parole Violation/Abscond
* Felony warrant- Probation Violation
* Failure to Report as Sex Offender
* Felony Attempt to Elude in Vehicle
* Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle
* DUII - Controlled Substance
* Reckless Driving
* Misdemeanor Driving While Suspended
* Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree
Williams was also cited for Possession of Less than an Ounce of Marijuana and may face more charges pending further investigation. OSP was assisted by law enforcement officers from John Day Police Department and US Forest Service.
