Two adults were injured Saturday afternoon when their vehicle traveled off Highway 140W into Klamath Lake. The two adults, along with the 10-month old child not injured, got out of the vehicle and made it back to shore where several people who stopped at the scene helped them until emergency responders arrived. Oregon State Police (OSP) is conducting the investigation.
On July 20, 2013 at approximately 12:45 p.m., a passenger vehicle driven by JENNIFER L. SMITH, age 24, from Klamath Falls, was westbound on Highway 140W near milepost 58 when it traveled off the highway and into Klamath Lake. As the vehicle was sinking, right front passenger CHRISTOPHER MARCHMAN, age 25, from Klamath Falls, unstrapped a ten-month old child from his car seat and swam a short distance back to shore with the child and SMITH.
All three occupants were transported to Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The child had no reported injury.
The vehicle was towed out of the water and removed from the scene.
OSP troopers from the Klamath Falls Area Command office are investigating the crash. Trooper Travis Peterson is the lead investigator. Driver inattention may be a contributing factor.
OSP was assisted at the scene by Klamath County Sheriff's Office and Klamath County Fire District.
