Update: Second Person Dies Following 8/4/13 Fatal Traffic Crash - Highway 101 north of Lincoln City (Photo)

Oregon State Police (OSP) learned a second person died following an August 4, 2013 fatal traffic crash that occurred on Highway 101 north of Lincoln City. MILDRED M. KAUFFMAN, age 89, from Lincoln City, was a passenger in one of the involved vehicles and died a few days ago following treatment for serious injuries. OSP, with the assistance of the Lincoln County Interagency Crash team, is continuing the investigation.

On August 4, 2013 at approximately 6:45 p.m., a 2001 Cadillac Deville driven by PATTY A. WEISSENFLUH, age 58, from Depoe Bay, was southbound on Highway 101 near milepost 111 traveling through a right curve when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a northbound 2012 Kia Soul driven by DONNA JEANNE BALL, age 71, from Salem.

DONNA BALL was transported by REACH air ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland where she died after about four hours after the crash.

A passenger in the Kia, WILLIAM LEE BALL SR, age 74, from Salem, was transported by PACWEST ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with serious injuries.

WEISSENFLUH was transported by REACH air ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with critical injuries.

KAUFFMAN, a passenger in the Cadillac, was transported by PACWEST ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with serious injuries.

All occupants were using safety restraints.

OSP troopers from the Newport Area Command office are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash. Trooper Brian Tucker is the lead investigator. Upon completion, the investigation will be reviewed by the Lincoln County District Attorney's Office for consideration of possible enforcement action.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Lincoln City Police Department, North Lincoln Fire & Rescue, PACWEST ambulance, REACH air ambulance, and ODOT. The highway was closed over 4 hours with a detour in place for passenger vehicles.
