Highway 140 -- JACKSON COUNTY
On November 21, 2016 at about 8:10pm OSP troopers responded to a single vehicle crash on Highway 140 near milepost 31.5 (31 miles east of Medford).
Preliminary investigation revealed a 2006 Ford pick-up was westbound on Highway 140 when it slid off the icy roadway into a ditch. The operator, Kevin CAIN, 31 of Klamath Falls and his pregnant wife, 40 year old Melinda VINCENT were not injured. A second vehicle, a 2006 Chrysler driven by 59 year old Dexter WILLIAMS and his wife, 66 year old Catherine WILLIAMS, both of Klamath Falls stopped to render assistance. An off duty EMT, 41 year old Michael TUTTLE of Shady Cove also stopped to assist. The WILLIAMS' placed VINCENT in their van and they were outside the vehicles near the Ford when the third vehicle approached.
The operator of the third vehicle, a 1998 Saturn lost control and crashed into the back of the van and struck several people outside the pickup. The operator of the Saturn was pronounced deceased on scene. The identity of this operator is being withheld until next of kin can be located and notified.
Catherine WILLIAMS, was taken by air ambulance to Sky Lakes Hospital in Klamath Falls with non-life threatening injuries.
Dexter WILLIAMS was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford with non-life threatening injuries.
TUTTLE was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
VINCENT was transported to Sky Lakes Hospital with minor injuries and as a precaution.
CAIN was not injured.
Speed and road conditions are being investigated as contributing factors into the crash. OSP was assisted by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Lake Creek Fire Department, Mercy Flights and Air Life of Klamath Falls. The Highway was reduced to one lane for approximately three and a half hours. More information will be released when it becomes available.
Interstate 5 - JOSEPHINE COUNTY
On November 21, 2016 at about 11:45PM, OSP Troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of a multiple vehicle crash on Interstate 5 southbound near milepost 52 (just south of Grants Pass).
Preliminary information is a 2007 Ford pickup was traveling southbound on Interstate 5 when it drifted off the freeway and into the grassy median. The vehicle then rolled several times, ejecting the driver onto the shoulder of the interstate. The Ford came to rest in the travel lanes of I-5. The driver of a southbound 1995 Nissan sedan was unable to avoid colliding with the unoccupied Ford.
The driver of the Ford, Garette D WILSON, age 30, of Grants Pass was taken to a local hospital where he died shortly after arriving. The driver of the Nisan, Alexis WILLIAMS, age 35, of Ashland, was not injured.
Contributing factors are still being investigated for this crash. I-5 southbound was closed for over an hour and a half before one lane was open for travel. More information will be released when it becomes available.
