With approximately 15,000 people expected to attend this weekend's Willamette Country Music Festival in Brownsville off Interstate 5 between Eugene and Albany, law enforcement agencies are urging all concert-goers and area travelers to be prepared for traffic congestion and have a sober, rested driver operating every vehicle.
The Willamette Country Music Festival starts Friday, August 16, and concludes Sunday, August 18. With the expected traffic impact and increased potential for impaired drivers on area roads, law enforcement officers from Oregon State Police (OSP), Linn County Sheriff's Office, Eugene Police Department, Springfield Police Department, and Lebanon Police Department are partnering together to increase enforcement presence and deter drivers from getting behind the wheel impaired.
Helping enforcement efforts and to keep officers available in the local area, the OSP Mobile DUII Processing Center (MDPC) motor home will be utilized in the area for local processing of persons arrested for DUII. The MDPC was purchased in 2007 through grant provided through ODOTs Transportation Safety Division and is equipped with three Intoxilyzer Model 8000 breath-alcohol testing equipment, three work stations with laptops and printers, and two temporary holding cells. The unit also includes emergency supplies, cell phones and radio communications equipment.
The high-visibility interagency DUII and traffic safety enforcement effort kicks off a national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign running August 16 through the Labor Day Holiday, September 2, 2013.
Although it is illegal in all 50 states to drive under the influence, far too many people get behind the wheel after consuming too much alcohol. Every year, about one third of all motor vehicle traffic deaths involve one or more drunk drivers or motorcycle operators.
Everyone is urged to play an important role this weekend and every day in keeping our roads safer by immediately reporting aggressive, dangerous, and intoxicated drivers to OSP at 1-800-24DRUNK (1-800-243-7865) or call 9-1-1.
