Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers arrested a 26-year old male Monday afternoon on traffic-related charges after more than 15 citizens called in driving complaints as he drove southbound on Interstate 5 from the Wilsonville area toward Salem. The driver is identified as JEREMY ENGLISH from southwest Portland. He was lodged in Marion County Jail for Reckless Driving and 18 counts of Recklessly Endangering Another Person.
On March 24, 2014 at approximately 12:35 p.m., the first of several citizen driving complaints were phoned into to OSP Northern Command Center of a gold passenger car, later identified as a 1999 Ford Taurus, southbound on Interstate 5 at high speeds, passing on shoulders, and using all three lanes of traffic.
At 12:50 p.m. an OSP trooper got visual on the vehicle near Brooks and as it had slowed down approaching the Salem area. After exiting Interstate 5 onto Salem Parkway Avenue, at approximately 12:53 p.m. the trooper attempted a traffic stop but the driver failed to yield to the trooper's patrol car until stopping near Hyacinth Street NE.
OSP troopers took ENGLISH into custody without incident.
OSP and ODOT reminds all travelers that many people are hitting our highways day and night during spring break period, March 22 - 30. During last year's spring break, six people died in 6 separate traffic crashes on Oregon's roads.
OSP urges all motorists to join their law enforcement officers in keeping our roads safe by obeying the posted speed, properly use safety restraints and child safety seats, don't drive distracted, drive safely within your traffic lane, and never drive impaired or fatigued.
Everyone traveling - bicyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and motorists alike - all have the individual responsibility for keeping our roads safe. As in this incident, immediately report aggressive, dangerous and intoxicated drivers to 9-1-1 or call OSP at 1-800-24DRUNK (800-243-7865).
No photographs for the release.
